Major industries include pulp‑and‑paper mills and Europe’s only chromium mine, part of the Kemi – Tornio stainless‑steel production chain.
Kemi is easily accessible by train or airplane. Its railway station is on the main north‑south line, and its airport is located only 6 km away from the centre.
